It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) mourns the passing of Professor Turner Tanimu Isoun, an eminent scientist, visionary statesman, distinguished Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, and one of Africa's most influential champions of science, technology, and innovation.

On behalf of the Governing Council, Fellows, and Secretariat of the African Academy of Sciences, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved family, friends, colleagues, the Government and people of Nigeria, and the entire African scientific community.
Professor Isoun was a remarkable scholar whose life embodied excellence, integrity, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to Africa's development. As a scientist, academic leader, university administrator, and former Minister of Science and Technology of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he dedicated his extraordinary talents to advancing scientific research, innovation, and human capital development across our continent.

The AAS owes Professor Isoun an enduring debt of gratitude. During his tenure as Nigeria's Minister of Science and Technology, he played a pivotal role in facilitating the historic US$5 million endowment generously provided by President Olusegun Obasanjo to the Academy This landmark investment transformed the Academy's financial foundation and secured an endowment that has strengthened its capacity to serve African science for more than two decades.

That singular act of visionary leadership was far more than a financial contribution. It represented a powerful declaration of confidence in Africa's scientific future and in the Academy's mission to mobilize science for the continent's development. The benefits of that investment continue to be felt today through the Academy's growth, its expanding programmes, and its increasing influence in promoting scientific excellence and evidence-informed policy across Africa.

Professor Isoun understood that no nation, and indeed no continent, can achieve sustainable development without investing in science, research, innovation, and the people who drive discovery. Throughout his distinguished career, he championed policies that strengthened scientific institutions, nurtured young researchers, promoted international collaboration, and positioned science as a cornerstone of national development.

As a Fellow of the AAS, he served on the Executive Board and was the founding Executive Editor of Discovery and Innovation, the Academy’s flagship journal dedicated to promoting scientific and technological advancement in Africa. Through these roles, he strengthened scientific collaboration, knowledge dissemination, and evidence-informed policymaking across the continent.

Those of us privileged to know him remember not only his intellect and accomplishments but also his extreme humility, wisdom, generosity, and ability to inspire others. He mentored countless scientists, encouraged emerging leaders, and demonstrated through his own life that public service and scientific excellence can be mutually reinforcing.

As the African Academy of Sciences continues its mission to become the leading voice of science in Africa, we shall remember Professor Isoun as one of the architects who helped secure the Academy's future. His vision, foresight, and steadfast support will remain woven into the fabric of our institution and will continue to inspire generations of African scientists.

Although his passing leaves a profound void, his legacy lives on: in the institutions he 
strengthened, the policies he shaped, the scientists he mentored, and the countless lives that have been enriched by his dedication to scientific advancement.

May we honour his memory not merely through words of tribute, but by renewing our commitment to the ideals he cherished: scientific excellence, integrity, innovation, collaboration, and service to humanity.

Professor Turner Tanimu Isoun has completed his earthly journey, but his contributions to African science will endure for generations.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
