The recent mission and rule changes proposed by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) have triggered significant alarm across academia and among fellows and affiliates of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS).

The African Academy of Sciences notes with concern the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, which has now been declared both a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the WHO and a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) by Africa CDC.

This dual declaration confirms what we already know: outbreaks in Africa are not isolated events.They are continental and global threats that demand coordinated, sustained, and proactive action for both rapid outbreak responses and to address the underlying drivers of these outbreaks.

The Africa regional evidence workshop co-hosted by AAS was the first workshop for the project. This was an opportunity to gather experts from across Africa to begin gathering evidence on clinical research career pathways within institutions.

For all countries, strengthening capacity to conduct clinical research is critically important.This is especially true for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where disease and mortality burdens are highest and the potential gains for improved health are greatest.

Science leaders remained conspicuously underrepresented on the main stages of the Forum, despite increasing global recognition of the critical role of science and evidence-based solutions in addressing planetary and societal challenges.

To this end, we have celebrated the next phase of the European Union (EU) - African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) 2, which we launched in June 2025 in Ghana, and the China-Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (CAASTIA) which was launched in November 2025 in Ethiopia.

Historic ARISE meeting marks 40 years of the African Academy of Sciences and launches Accra Declaration on science-driven development. In a defining moment for African science, the Government of Ghana hosted a high-level continental conference convened by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) to mark its 40th anniversary and accelerate progress in science, technology, and innovation (STI) across Africa.
