The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) congratulates Professor Rajeev Varshney, a distinguished agricultural scientist and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), on being named a 2026 Top Agri-food Pioneer by the World Food Prize Foundation. The prestigious recognition honors global leaders whose innovations are transforming food systems and improving the lives of millions of farmers around the world.

Prof Varshney is internationally renowned for his groundbreaking work in legume genomics, breeding, and seed systems. His research has helped bridge the gap between advanced genomic science and practical agricultural solutions for smallholder farmers across Africa and South Asia.

As Principal Investigator of the Tropical Legumes Project, Prof Varshney led one of the most impactful agricultural initiatives in the Global South. Under his leadership, the project delivered 266 improved crop varieties, produced nearly 500,000 tonnes of certified seed, and generated direct benefits for 25 million smallholder farmers across Africa and South Asia. These improved varieties have enhanced productivity, strengthened resilience to climate stresses, and increased food and nutritional security for farming communities.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Prof Varshney has made a profound contribution to capacity building. He has personally trained more than 500 plant breeders from 36 countries, equipping them with the skills to lead national crop improvement programs and drive agricultural innovation within their own countries.

As a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Prof Varshney exemplifies the Academy’s commitment to recognizing excellence and supporting scientists whose work delivers measurable impact.
