The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) congratulates Professor Kenneth Ngure, a distinguished public health researcher and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), on his election as President of the International AIDS Society (IAS). Prof Ngure was elected during the 25th International AIDS Conference, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 26–31 July 2026, marking a significant achievement for African leadership in the global HIV response.

Prof Ngure’s election recognizes his outstanding contributions to HIV prevention research, global health, and the advancement of evidence-based approaches to addressing the HIV epidemic. As President of the IAS, he will help advance the Society’s mission of leading collective action on every aspect of the global HIV response while strengthening collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, communities, policymakers, and advocates.

A leading researcher and academic in Kenya, Prof Ngure has dedicated his career to improving HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health, particularly among communities disproportionately affected by HIV. His research has contributed to a better understanding of HIV prevention, including biomedical and behavioural interventions, while amplifying the voices and needs of communities in global health research.

Through his scientific leadership and commitment to equitable health outcomes, Prof Ngure has contributed to strengthening Africa’s role in shaping the global HIV research and policy agenda. His work demonstrates the importance of African-led research and leadership in developing solutions that respond to the continent’s health priorities while contributing to global knowledge.

As a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Prof Ngure exemplifies the Academy’s mandate to recognise and celebrate scientific excellence across Africa. His election to lead the International AIDS Society further highlights the calibre and global influence of AAS Fellows and the important contributions African scientists are making to international health and scientific discourse.
