Overview

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), will convene a high-level scientific showcasing event at the University of Burundi. This event forms part of a series of engagements designed to strengthen scientific collaboration between African researchers and European research institutions.

The forum will spotlight research emerging from the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) programme—an AAS flagship initiative supported by the EU to advance research excellence, capacity building, and innovation across Africa. It will feature leading ARISE fellows and international partners working on water sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental management.

With a focus on water security, the event will provide a platform for showcasing cutting-edge research, including innovations in water reclamation, groundwater systems, and pollution mitigation. It will also facilitate dialogue among scientists, policymakers, and development partners on strengthening research cooperation and translating scientific knowledge into practical solutions.

By fostering collaboration between African and European research communities, the event contributes to broader continental and global priorities, including the African Union’s 2026 theme on sustainable water availability and sanitation, as well as Agenda 2063.

Objective

To foster scientific exchange and collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders in the water and climate sectors, and to advance innovative, science-based solutions for sustainable water management and environmental resilience in Africa.

Expected Outcomes

  • Enhanced visibility and recognition of the ARISE programme and its impact across Africa
  • Strengthened research and institutional partnerships between African and European stakeholders
  • Increased knowledge exchange on innovative approaches to water sustainability and climate resilience
  • Contribution to evidence-informed policy dialogue on water management and sanitation
  • Reinforced capacity and leadership of African researchers addressing critical development challenges
  • Greater awareness of science diplomacy and international research collaboration frameworks
